SUMMARY:Istanbul Innovation Days 2025: shaping the institutions of tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Since their inception in 2015\, Istanbul Innovation Days have served as the development community’s flagship event for exploring emerging signals of change\, co-creating transformative pathways\, and building innovative partnerships for a better future. \n\n\n\nThis time\, we focus on Institutional Innovation in an Unsecure World — a topic of profound relevance to our current moment. In a world increasingly defined by persistent “polycrises”—where overlapping political\, climatic\, economic\, and technological challenges converge—our institutions struggle to provide adequate responses. Yet\, these moments of complexity also offer unprecedented opportunities to rethink and transform institutional paradigms. \n\n\n\nThe upcoming Istanbul Innovation Days (IID) will take place in Istanbul on 25-26 March 2025\, in partnership with the Government of Türkiye. Brought to you by UNDP\, TIAL and Demos Helsinki\, IID 2025 will explore how public institutions might reinvent themselves to seize these opportunities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead more\n\n\n\nExplore the official website\n\n\n\nSee the programme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRelated posts\n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n Dozens of illustration cases celebrated at Istanbul Innovation Days 2025\n \n \n \n 13 March 2025 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n In preparation for Istanbul Innovation Days 2025\, for which TIAL has partnered up with the… \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Institutional innovation and institutional design start to garner media attention\n \n \n \n 12 March 2025 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n The story of institutional innovation is getting told around the world. \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n TIAL x UNDP: A time to build – shaping the next generation of public institutions\n \n \n \n 19 December 2024 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n In March 2025\, the IID – through a partnership with Demos Helsinki & TIAL – will focus… \n \n Read More

SUMMARY:Reimagining public institutions: A time for bold experiments
DESCRIPTION:We are living in an era of intersecting crises—climate disruption\, digital transformation\, displacement\, misinformation\, and inequality. These aren’t isolated issues but systemic and deeply interwoven. Today’s volatility demands institutions that can lead with clarity\, legitimacy\, and a long-term perspective. \n\n\n\nThe question is no longer how to restore the status quo—but who we\, and our institutions\, need to become to lead through permanent unpredictability.  \n\n\n\nAt the 2025 Creative Bureaucracy Festival\, taking place in Berlin\, this session invites you into a live fishbowl conversation with Demos Helsinki\, Transition Collective\, and TIAL. We’ll explore real-world experiments in reinventing public institutions—from housing and climate resilience to AI governance. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we’ll unpack design principles\, values\, and trade-offs—and open the space to your questions and ideas. \n\n\n\nA session for curious civil servants\, institutional innovators\, and those ready to lead beyond business as usual. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet your Festival ticket here\n\n\n\nFind out more about the Festival\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nChristian Bason\, Co-founder\, Transition Collective\n\n\n\nNina Langerholc\, City Transformation Lead\, Demos Helsinki \n\n\n\nGeoff Mulgan\, Professor\, University College London & Co-Founder\, TIAL\n\n\n\nCaio Werneck\, Community Coordinator\, TIAL \n\n\n\nLouise Agersnap\, Head of Innovation Hub\, World Health Organisation

SUMMARY:Workshop: Institutional imagination @ Innovation Week 2025\, Brazil
DESCRIPTION:When nature evolves faster than our institutions\, how do we adapt?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy focus on institutional imagination in the context of climate risk?\n\n\n\nHeatwaves intensify\, water systems destabilise\, and ecosystems shift. Yet\, our public institutions remain largely designed for the 20th century. Nature evolves far faster than our organograms\, exposing gaps in how we represent\, recognise\, and respond to ever-changing realities.  \n\n\n\nTo respond effectively\, our institutions need to be reimagined as craftwork: constructs that are able to learn from change rather than be overwhelmed by it\, solid without rigidity\, light without fragmentation\, and adaptive without losing direction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you can expect\n\n\n\nThis workshop\, coordinated by TIAL\, will take nature’s accelerating pressures as the starting point for institutional innovation. Together\, we will explore: \n\n\n\n\nWhy institutions must evolve at the pace of natural change\n\n\n\nExamples of governments tackling extreme heat\, water stress\, and land-use transitions\n\n\n\nCollective imagination exercises inspired by natural systems — from mycelium networks to coral reefs — to sketch new organisational forms\n\n\n\nA mapping of the competencies and skills needed for future-ready institutional design\n\n\n\n\nContributors include Christian Bason (Transition Collective)\, Caio Werneck (TIAL)\, and Natália Oliveira (TIAL). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should join?\n\n\n\nPublic leaders\, policy innovators\, government managers\, multilateral organisation staff\, and civic practitioners interested in building institutions that keep pace with ecological and social transformation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImportant information:\n\n\n\n📍 Brasília\, Brazil \n\n\n\n📅 2 October 2025 \n\n\n\nThe first part of the workshop will be conducted in English\, but the rest will be in Portuguese. \n\n\n\nAs part of Innovation Week 2025\, held by Brazil’s National School of Public Administration (ENAP). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat you will get\n\n\n\n\nA framework for understanding institutional lag versus ecological acceleration\n\n\n\nInsights from governments experimenting with institutional reinvention\n\n\n\nHands-on exercises to imagine governance models shaped by natural principles\n\n\n\nA skills map for working with institutional design in times of rapid change\n\n\n\nConnection to peers committed to rethinking governance for a turbulent century\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to register \n\n\n\nIf you are attending Innovation Week\, you will receive instructions about how to register to this and other workshops before the event starts.

SUMMARY:TIAL @ COP30: Building tipping points governance
DESCRIPTION:Regional science–policy Interchanges for anticipating\, avoiding & adapting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nPlanetary tipping points—from ocean circulation to rainforest collapse—pose nonlinear risks that current governance systems struggle to anticipate. This session brings together scientists and policymakers to advance institutional design for monitoring and responding to these complex shifts. \n\n\n\nThe discussion builds on the 2025 Global Tipping Points Report concept note for a global network of Tipping Element Monitoring and Response Facilities (TEMRFs). Participants will explore key design considerations and identify pathways to implementation. \n\n\n\nHosted by TIAL\, with co-organisers CEBRI\, the workshop connects regional leaders and scientific experts working to translate frontier science into governance innovation. \n\n\n\nRead the event description → \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nModeratorJessica Seddon — Co-Founder\, The Institutional Architecture Lab \n\n\n\nConfirmed speakers include:Karen Ellemann — Secretary General\, Nordic Council of MinistersMarielos Peña-Claros — Co-chair\, Science Panel for the AmazonArunabha Ghosh — South Asia Special Envoy to COP30 & CEO\, Council on Energy\, Environment and Water\, India \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRelated work\n\n\n\nThis workshop builds on TIAL’s ongoing Interchange project\, which develops institutional frameworks for complex science–policy challenges such as climate tipping points. \n\n\n\nFind relevant resources: \n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n \n \n The “Interchange” project: Toward an institutional architecture for representing\, recognising\, and responding to tipping elements\n \n \n \n 16 July 2025 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n The project focuses on building the foundations for a closer connection between science and traditional… \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Project update: Building institutional architecture for governing climate tipping points\n \n \n \n 7 November 2025 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n TIAL’s “Tipping Element Interchange” project focuses on developing new institutional architectures capable of recognising and… \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n White Paper #004: Interchange: Design building blocks for complex science-policy challenges\n \n \n \n 10 November 2025 \n \n No Comments \n \n \n This paper proposes a new institutional architecture framework — the Interchange — to address complex\,… \n \n Read More\n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can also download the Global Tipping Points concept note here.

SUMMARY:Master class: Institutionalising for impact
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive deep-dive learning experience on imagining\, structuring\, organising and mobilising for long-term & systemic societal change. Hosted by Transition Collective in partnership with TIAL and Demos Helsinki. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and where?\n\n\n\n\nCopenhagen\, June 23rd to June 24th\, 2026 – preceded by an introductory webinar\n\n\n\nVenue: Thoravej 29\, 2400 Copenhagen NV\, Denmark\n\n\n\n\nThe Master Class is held in partnership and conjunction with the Organising for Uncertain Worlds global conference\, held at Thoravej 29\, Copenhagen on June 25-26\, 2026. \n\n\n\nInstitutions matter\n\n\n\nWe live in a world where public institutions we have come to take for granted\, such as public services\, defense and health care\, are being challenged and even breaking down. Global challenges\, including the multiple environmental crises\, election insecurity\, forced migration and uncertain futures of AI\, are resulting in decreasing trust towards public institutions\, polarisation\, and the known approaches becoming outdated. We need to develop new approaches for increasing wisdom in decision-making\, aligning our actions today with goals in the long term and finding ways to penetrate and bridge across siloed organisations. This is where institutions become relevant – perhaps more than ever. \n\n\n\nThis Master Class brings together the thinking in institutional architecture with cutting-edge approaches from public design\, systems change\, mission-oriented innovation\, and other transition methodologies in a comprehensive\, interactive learning process. \n\n\n\nBy participating\, you will achieve the following learning outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nRecognise the impetus to build and govern societal institutions differently under complexity and crisis\n\n\n\nLearn to imagine and design new institutional forms and governance arrangements—temporary authorities\, adaptive regulators—instead of stretching old mandates\, convincing other alternatives\n\n\n\nInsight into the basics of mission-led approaches to societal change\n\n\n\nChange in perspective to enable work with deep & sustainable change.\n\n\n\n\nHigh-level program\n\n\n\nDay 1: Tuesday\, 23rd June\n\n\n\n\n17.00 to 22.00: Arrival – introduction\, networking\, inspirational talks\, dinner & drinks\n\n\n\n\nDay 2: Wednesday\, 24th June\n\n\n\n\n08.00 Arrival & coffees\n\n\n\n08.30 Welcome & introductions\n\n\n\n09.00 Global insights: Why redesign institutions for change?\n\n\n\n11.00 Unpacking global cases and peer-to-peer learning\n\n\n\n12.00 Lunch\n\n\n\n12.45 Inspirational local guest speaker: A voice from the place\n\n\n\n13.45 Reimagining institutions for change: Co-creative case work on:\n\nStrategic imagination\n\n\n\nMissions & mobilization\n\n\n\nInstitutional architecture\n\n\n\n\n\n16.30 Reflections and peer-to-peer sharing\n\n\n\n17.00 End session and segway to the global conference\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s the cost?\n\n\n\n\nEarly bird (before April 1st): €500\, excl.
