SUMMARY:Symposium on Institutional Innovation in Cities
DESCRIPTION:This symposium is a partnership between The Institutional Architecture Lab (TIAL) and the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University. \n\n\n\nCity governments worldwide face complex challenges that cut across traditional departmental boundaries – from climate adaptation and organized crime to mental health and energy transitions. Traditional vertical hierarchies and functional silos were designed for stable\, bounded problems in the 19th century. Today’s overlapping emergencies and slow-burning crises demand different organizational forms\, particularly to make the most of data\, digital technologies\, and AI\, which have opened up radically different options for public institutions. \n\n\n\nThis symposium explores how cities can move beyond hierarchies to design institutions – platforms\, stacks\, networks\, and other forms – that coordinate across boundaries. Hosted by Transition Collective in partnership with TIAL and Demos Helsinki. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen and where?\n\n\n\n\nCopenhagen\, June 23rd to June 24th\, 2026 – preceded by an introductory webinar\n\n\n\nVenue: Thoravej 29\, 2400 Copenhagen NV\, Denmark\n\n\n\n\nThe Master Class is held in partnership and conjunction with the Organising for Uncertain Worlds global conference\, held at Thoravej 29\, Copenhagen on June 25-26\, 2026. \n\n\n\nInstitutions matter\n\n\n\nWe live in a world where public institutions we have come to take for granted\, such as public services\, defense and health care\, are being challenged and even breaking down. Global challenges\, including the multiple environmental crises\, election insecurity\, forced migration and uncertain futures of AI\, are resulting in decreasing trust towards public institutions\, polarisation\, and the known approaches becoming outdated. We need to develop new approaches for increasing wisdom in decision-making\, aligning our actions today with goals in the long term and finding ways to penetrate and bridge across siloed organisations.
